Are aluminium suitcases worth it? ›

Aluminum luggage is more durable than polycarbonate or softside luggage, though it's still prone to scratches and dents. It also tends to be more secure, as aluminum suitcases typically (but not always) close via latches rather than zippers. Many travelers think aluminum luggage is among the most stylish aesthetic.

The Rimowa's all-metal exterior is exceptionally strong but, unfortunately, adds a few pounds to this otherwise luxury carry on. Tipping the scales at 9.5 pounds, it ranks among the heaviest bags on our list.

Aluminum suitcases are often heavier than plastic hard-sided suitcases. Aluminum suitcases cannot be overpacked, even more so than other hard-sided bags made of plastic. Aluminum suitcases tend to be more flashy and may draw unwanted attention to your belongings while traveling.

Sure, new competitor brands are cheaper, but they are offering cheaper materials and labor in exchange. To really break down, most of Rimowa's cases (including this one) are 80 percent made by hand, which takes 90 steps to build, 200 parts, 33 technicians, and about an hour and a half each to produce.

Aluminium luggage trolleys are comfortable, light, strong and can be customised. They are the best choice for airports. When travelling with luggage, pulling a trolley that adds weight and makes it difficult to manoeuvre is very uncomfortable.

At the same time, the more expensive hard-sided suitcases, such as those made of polycarbonate or aluminum, have proven just how durable and sturdy they can be. They also aren't as easily damaged or stained as compared to soft-sided suitcases.
