Feb. 6

Feast of Fools: Living Lord Lutheran Church in Bartlett will host a Feast of Fools from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6. This Mardi Gras-themed event will include a light soup supper, silent auction and concert to raise money for a local young woman's medical fund. Proceeds from the silent auction and a freewill offering collected will benefit the Zuleica Arano medical fund to help pay for her post-transplant medications. Souper Bowl of Caring: Saint Paul Lutheran Church of Mount Prospect will hold a special collection of food and money for the Mount Prospect Food Pantry as part of a national youth service project starting on Super Bowl Weekend, Feb. 6 and 7. Midwinter Warm-up Workshop: Glenview Community Church, 1000 Elm Street in Glenview, is holding a Midwinter Warm-up Workshop for local choir members from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6. Composer and conductor Paul Leddington Wright will lead a day of workshops, fellowship and singing, focusing on the many aspects of choral, congregational and organ music in worship throughout the church year. The day will culminate in "Hymn Fest 5: To Everything There is a Season." This singalong concert of hymns and anthems offers a musical journey through the church year. Fun fest: A February Fun Fest, hosted by Congregation Beth Judea of Long Grove, will take place from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in the gym at Woodlawn School, 6362 Gilmer Road in Long Grove. Fun for all ages. Food will include appetizers, a buffet meal, popcorn, a Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Bar and cotton candy. There will be a live auction, a silent auction, a special auction of sports and entertainment memorabilia as well as other raffle prizes. Scouting Sunday Celebration: Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (ELCA) will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America on Sunday, Feb. 7, at the church, 930 W. The church is looking for current and former Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing Crew members and adult Scout leaders to help with ushering, reading and serving as Communion assistants on Scout Sunday. Genetics: The Education arm of the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea is proud to be presenting Michelle Gilats, a genetic counselor from the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders and Children's Memorial Hospital, who will be discussing "Shaping Your Family Tree: Genetics and the Next Generation." This program will take place at 7:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, in the synagogue Social Hall. The meeting is free of and open to all. Learn about inherited health links among Ashkenazi Jews, from genetic disorders such as Tay-Sachs, Canavan Disease and Cystic Fibrosis to hereditary forms of breast, ovarian and colon cancer. Networking support: The Northwest Suburban Jewish Networking Group is working together to host professional networking support meetings from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays. On Feb. 8 and 22, the meetings will be at Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road, Long Grove. Members of the networking group provide information and discussion on job hunting. They share "war stories," interview tips and circulate information on job sites, other networking groups and open postings. They provide industry speakers at various meetings to help members learn what the business world is like in today's environment and how best to handle the challenges they face. Guest vocalist: In honor of Black History Month, vocalist Gloria Cotton is coming to Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday, Feb. 14. Cotton has sung with countless ensembles throughout the Chicago area and is best known as a recording artist with Charles Clency and Voices of Melody. Feb. 17

Ash Wednesday: Lent begins on Feb. 17, Ash Wednesday, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. Our Savior's will hold a noon service of Holy Communion including the imposition of ashes. A short Family Service will be held in the Fellowship Hall at 7 p.m. and a Holy Communion service with the imposition of ashes at 7:30 p.m. Music for the noon and 7:30 p.m. services will include simple and ancient chants sung by the men's "Schola" Choir. For the five subsequent Wednesdays, Our Saviour's will offer worship for all ages from 7:15 to 8 p.m. using the Holden Evening prayer service. Book discussion: Go beyond the resolutions and begin the year with a revelation and perhaps transformation through a small group book discussion called "The Prodigal God." The discussion, taking place at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, kicks off on Feb. 17 at the 7 p.m. Lenten Service. Small discussion groups will meet five times during Lent for approximately one hour to share thoughts on the week's reading. Matrix: The film "The Matrix" described a future in which reality, as perceived by humans, is actually a simulated reality known as the Matrix. New counseling center: The Interfaith Counseling Center offers counseling to individuals, couples and families on a freewill offering basis for up to three visits.
