I have a silver 2008 Grand Touring PRHT, black leather, all options/top of the line with 30,400 miles. It's in perfect condition, super clean. Garaged all winter. Bought it from a family member in 2018 with 16K miles on it.

I live in CT, am trying to figure out how to price it in the current market. Time to sell it... pricing ideas in this crazy market?

Is there a trustworthy place to review current sales?

Thanks!

Since there aren't a ton of these out there in CT there's a thin market to determine value. It's more about finding the buyer than determining the market, IMO. It doesn't matter what its' worth if there's no buyers for a premium level Miata.

FWIW, I had exactly 2 inquiries on my 60k mile 2011 GT PRHT - and this is in the 5th largest city in the country. There were probably only about 4 comps of PRHT NC2's, 2 with higher mileage and 2 with higher prices. There just weren't a lot of people who where interest in a 10 year old Miata selling at over half of it's original MSRP. Maybe the colder weather there might attract more buyers for a PRHT?

I new prices were crazy but I wasn't going to be greedy. I knew that if I priced mine cheaper than the comps I would, at minimum, know that everyone that saw the others would consider mine too. It was easy to undercut Carvana, I also checked out the dealers/Autotrader and made sure my car was priced less than theirs, as well as the nearly zero PRHT's that were on Craigslist by owner. All this didn't guaranty a sale, but it did make sure that anyone looking had to at least consider mine.

It looks like you bought it 3 years ago with 16K miles, if I were in your shoes I would be looking to get back what I paid for it.

Is it an automatic or M/T?

You can expect a better price if you are closer to NYC/coast than Worcester, Springfield, or Providence.

I bet back in May Carvana was offering about $17K and now Carvana is offering about $11k.

Good Luck.

Kind of an obfuscation. He didn't say what he bought it for. If he bought it for $8,000 he'd be nuts to accept that. If he paid $21,000 he be nuts to expect that.

Here's it's history - I bought it from my father-in-law's estate when he passed for $3K. Sat in his garage most of the time. He owned a DC law firm and only drove it occasionally. He scuffed the rims in town and slightly damaged the front bumper in his garage - so I had the rims professionally renewed and replaced the bumper and painted, minor paint refresh and buff out, and tires - for about $2K - so total was around $5K. So you see why I bought it. Love this car and love driving it more, but just bought a new, more practical car.

It's a manual 6, black leather, GT, PRHT, w/traction control, all options. I'm looking to sell for current market value - which is the point of this thread, determining its fair market value.

Hal - thanks for the links! Can't believe what high mileage examples are getting. The prices are all over the place.

BnB - I live in Fairfield County, 45 mins outside of NYC. Should be a market for it around here.

Really appreciate the feedback. Now..... where to list it?!

.

Yeah, if you have $5,000 in to it then definitely don't do this

Emogi boy, You really think you could pick up a 2010 NC PRHT with 16K 3 years ago for $5K? Really?

Why are you asking me? You made made a statement that he should sell it for what he paid, not me. Or are you claiming he didn't pay $5,000? Either stand by your statement or say, oops, you were mistaken. Chill

Yes I paid around $5K for this total in 2018, inside family deal. And when I sell it I want market for it.

So Carvana offered $9,968 today, KBB says private sales average in my zip between $13,634 to $16,351 > average being $14,993.

At least I'm getting somewhere. Thanks again for the advice and links.

I’m thinking around $15k. YMMV

When I place my Craigslist ad I got a little co*cky, and basically said that if they can find anything even close to this year, condition, with the hardtop, and miles, and I'll probably Beat It by at least a thousand. Dealers in private party I wanted between $17,000 and $20,000. I sold mine for $16,000, however Private Sales in Arizona don't have tax so there was an additional $1,500 in savings compared to a dealer. I'd stick at the 15 if you don't have to get rid of it, and let potential buyers find out for themselves what a great deal it is

Exactly what I've decided to do today - $15K and I'm in no hurry. "Build it and they will come" ;-)

When you start getting the proverbial responses -"KB says it's only worth $xxx", or "a 13 year old car isn't worth that much", Respecfully and as nicely as you can, respond "I know it seems to be priced high, but I based my pricing on what the market seems to be asking not 'the book' and I completely understand if you feel my sales price is too high. If, after looking at other cars you're still interested, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for you interest"

Why so rick?

I don't know who Rick is but if he is like me he must be really handsome, smart, have a really good job, and rich...

My point exactly:

Fair Market retail price of a 10 year old NC PHRT with under 20K miles in 2018 was $15K.

Fair Market retail price of a 13 year old NC PHRT with about 30K miles in fall 2021 is $15K.

I worked for a couple of dealerships many moons ago while in college. More than once when a prospective buyer started bringing up the "book"... The salesman responded with "Well call up the book and order one!"

I've used it once or twice when selling privately. I know it's bit of smart@ss response but I was pretty confident they were tire-kickers.

Yeah, that "the book doesn't buy cars" line has been used by practically every dealer in America. And every salesman today still thinks he's so clever when he says it.

I placed it in the local paper and got a few lookers and one serious buyer but all wanted to start at $10K. I found the experience time-consuming and annoying of course. So I decided to list it on KBB / AutoTrader and Carvana. Both offered me about $10K. Then I got calls from two dealers who asked me to come in and they may offer more. I went to the first one and was offered $11K. Said he'd offer more if it was springtime. Then went to a Kia dealer who called and said I'd take no less than $13K, not expecting them to come back accepting this price. After all, they're a dealer and '08's like mine are selling at dealers right now in my area for around $15K.

They did and I accepted. I took $2K less than a private sale because of the ease of the deal, no seeking out a private buyer for who knows how long and negotiating endlessly, and a check-in hand in 20 minutes. Boom! It was done. Sometimes ease of the deal and cash in hand makes your mind up. Easy peasy and frankly that was a pretty darn good price.

Yes - I do miss her. But it was time.

Glad it worked out.

Selling online to the internet tire kickers is 'fun' - I don't mind it most of the time but it can get taxing.

Sounds like a win-win, the Covid bump let you get much more out of it than you might normally and a dealer made the transaction painless.
